Financial advisors seem to be divided on this topic. Some tell you to invest in a basic wardrobe of high-end clothing because the finer quality ensures that it will last longer and remain stylish. Others will tell you to buy inexpensive clothing on sale. Which do you do?

I usually buy more expensive clothes, but only when they're on ridiculous sales.  I don't care so much about what designer it is or whatnot, but rather that it's good quality.  Today I wore a skirt to church that I purchased seven years ago.  Now that's quality!

I have never bought expensive clothing.  Nor have I had a problem with my clothing wearing out.  I have plenty of skirts, dresses, jeans even from 5-6 years ago still.  My children's clothing, on the other hand, wear out or they grow out of them quickly, so I buy inexpensive clothing.
I make some of my own clothing and they last long too.

I've thought about making some stuff on my own, but then I look at fabric prices and think twice! What types of items have you done yourself?

I buy used - thrift stores and second hand stores.  The greatest buys come at estate sales!  And you can often get some really nice clothes.  I think the key is buying things that look good on you and make you feel good.  Buying just because it is inexpensive or even expensive just leaves you with a closet full of stuff that you aren't going to wear and that takes up room.

I'm not a great seamstress.  I make simple skirts, pajamas for everyone, shirts and shirt dresses.  I only shop for fabric at a discount place around here - overstock fabric.  I can make a great skirt for about $5.00.

Oh you make pajamas? My girls LOVE their pajamas. Maybe I could try making them some, I bet they'd love it!

That's a fabulous idea.  I'm not a terrific seamstress but I've altered shirts before and made skirts too Smiley

Well, I don't do it expressely to save money, but because I like sewing and think its really neat to wear something that no one else is wearing.  Making the PJs is just cost effective.  I can whip up PJ pants for my boys for $1.00.  A lot better than spending $10.00 on each one at the store!

Wow $1.  That's a bargin (free is the only thing better).  It's a matter of finding the time and space to sew for me.  I've got the machine and patterns, but I don't get much farther than that.

Time is the stickler for me!  I never have enough of it.  But, I figure, since they say "Time is money," if I save enough money, I must get some more time, too.  Cheesy  It never works though.

I figure that if I buy thrift store for now, when I get in ship shape condition I can splurge on some quality clothes.  Last time I thought that, I ended up getting pregnant before I got there - but I'm determined to be consistant and commited this time.

I usually invest in expensive clothing like suits.  Granted, at this point in my life I only need one suit, so it wasn't a major investment when I bought a nice one a year ago.  But for general everyday wear, I go with cheap stuff for now.

I buy everything cheap. I really turning to ebay to try to get some quality clothing though. I really would love some Gap jeans. That would make my day!

You shouldn't buy your jeans online.  I was just watching an Oprah segment about jeans and she was showing how important it is for everyone to try on and try on and try on until they find the one perfect pair.
