I've always considered myself a bit of a cheap skate but I truly became frugal after I became a stay at home mother. Paying the bills is a real struggle and I'm totally committed to saving every penny I can.

I was always one to shop for a bargin. At 14, my mom felt comfortable giving me her credit card to go to the mall for school shopping (it never seemed to concern her that I could sign her name as well as she could ). I've gotten better as the money has gotten smaller and my own family has grown bigger.

I grew up quite poor, so even though I do okay now I'm always scared that I'm going to wind up eating Ramen noodles and oatmeal every day like I used to.

My frugality came from being poor as well - I didn't grow up that way, but was extremely poor during my marriage. Coupled with an absuive, controlling husband who would give me $20 and expect me to buy diapers, milk, and all food for us for a week - I learned to be frugal. It just made sense to stick with it after I divorced him.

Melos, holey moley! $20 to cover diapers, milk, and food...what, did he expect you to eat dirty diapers or something?

I'm truly blessed. My frugality (is that a word) has come from a desire to be a good steward, not from necessity.

I'm frugal because I'm on a stipend of $11,000 a year from school. I do freelance work in my spare time, but being a full-time student and a part-time teacher does NOT leave me lots of time to go get another job.

Lyric - he was kinda insane. I don't know what he expected me to do, quite frankly. We lived on Ramen and potatos mostly and I would use cloth diapers when he went out (he thought they were nasty and refused to let me use them all the time.)
Now, I'm just glad to be able to save money so I can spend it on things I think are worthwhile.

What a sad story Melos. I am so happy things are better for you now. It's a terrible feeling to live like that, I know.

It's terrible, but it's a blessing to be able to do it - if that makes sense.
Things that you can do are always better than things that you have to do even if they are the same things.

It definately was a learning experience. Being frugal takes a particular mindset I think. There are so many other things that I would rather spend money on than food or expensive clothing. Every 50 cents I can save on a can of soup is one step closer to realizing my dreams

I know what you mean. And when you have a plan to meet that dream it makes saving that 50 cents worth the effort.
